February 2011 Update
OYIN’s Mentor Program, formerly known as the CBAA Chicago Mentor Program, is off to a great start this year. The administrators at the Better Boys Foundation have generously allowed us to use their resources, including a meeting space and instructional support equipment. Students returned from last year, new students are joining the program, and parents are becoming more involved as well.
This
year, our curriculum is organized in modules that will help our students reach
specific goals. One goal is to
assist our students in developing their identities and self-awareness. Therefore, the activities in our
current module encourage them to think about the importance of family, family
history and values, the impact we have on our families, and the ways our
families influence us. From a
broader perspective, we will explore how historical events affect us today and
how the decisions we make will affect future generations.

March 2011 Update
On March 19, 2011, OYIN’s Mentor
Program took a trip to the DuSable Museum of African American History. During
our visit, we saw a movie about children's roles in
the Civil Rights Movement, which really reached our young people (and the
adults, for that matter) by revealing history from a unique perspective. We also had the opportunity to learn
from the museum’s inspiring, informative exhibits.
This field trip was the last activity of
our identity and self-awareness
module. Our next module will focus
on encouraging our students to connect with their community.

April '11 Update
On April
30, 2011, OYIN’s Mentor Program visited a hybrid house located in Chicago’s
Bronzeville community. Owner and
designer, Julian Dawson, took the group on an enlightening, informative tour of
the house while opening our eyes to
environmental and energy issues we need to face as individuals and engaged
members of society. This fieldtrip was part of a module that encourages our students to connect with their
community by learning its history and contributing to its improvement.

On May 14, 2011, OYIN's Mentor Program participants discussed issues affecting the Lawndale community, where our students live. Mentors and mentees used the Internet to find out what is being done to address those issues.

June 2011 Update
On June 11, 2011, OYIN's Mentor Program hosted a two-part, end-of-the-year celebration.
The first part was a breakfast for mentors, mentees, parents, staff, and board members. All who attended shared their heart-felt appreciation and commitment to the program.
The second part was a field trip to downtown Chicago for staff and mentees. Participants attended the Blues Festival and visited Millennium Park.
The entire day was filled with sharing and laughter. What a wonderful way to end the 2010-2011 academic year!!!
